Artist statement:
Covid times have been traumatic for many people. Most still havent recovered from those times
emotionally, mentally, and many, health-wise. Society still seems more divided than ever and opinions
become more and more radical.
Still it might seem as if the pandemic has never happened. All traces appear blurred, the whole social
experience forgotten.
Somehow I was not able to throw away my used FFP2 masks. I collected them, initially to deal with the
trash caused by the pandemic. I wanted to up-cycle them, give them new life. I cut the used masks into
stripes and wove them into a wall hanging. I used the ancient craft of weaving to break apart the super
dense, high-tech mask material, with a mesh so fine it even prevents viruses from entering. Through this
process I have built a relationship with my old masks. It reminded me how diligently they protected me
from sickness. They had been an important part of my life, and they still carry particles of my breath and
skin. By deconstructing and converting them into something beautiful, I leave a trace that it really did
happen. My artwork functions as a memorial for these times, a pandemic artifact.
